Job description: This position, reporting to the Finance Manager/Senior Accountant, is responsible for preparing complex financial analytics and contributing to the development of financial recommendations for clients. Key activities include developing complex spreadsheets for financial planning and forecasting, preparing budget submissions, and conducting variance analysis. The role offers the opportunity to collaborate with various stakeholders and contribute to the financial success of the organization.What will you do?
- Provide support to Senior Accountant/Finance Manager and operations by gathering data and developing spreadsheet reports for budget proposals
- Conducting analysis of monthly results, yearly budgets and actuals, review of one time items and further analysis, providing support, as needed
- Participate in the review of proposed capital profiles developed as part of the Capital Budget process, for reasonableness and completeness, ensuring that funding options are considered and provided to Senior Accountant/Finance Manager for review and sign-off
- Provide support in preparing recommendations to Operations including analysis of cost drivers and identifying potential areas where financial issues may occur
- Initiate the approval process, ensuring justification and support for any changes are documented through budget adjustment working papers
- Conduct analysis of data to support budget adjustments ensuring that any rate/fee changes are considered; conducting comparisons, benchmarking, forecasting projections, recovery ratios and links to agreements are all part of the considerations
- Perform budget consolidation and update information in COBS, supporting Operations in preparing documentation
- Prepare support analysis to incorporate into utility rate file
- Other related responsibilities
Qualifications
- Recognized professional accounting designation
- Professional designation is required CPA, CA, CMA or CGA
- Minimum three years of progressively responsible related accounting experience preferably within the public sector and utility environment
Assets:
- Experience working in a Utility environment
- Large corporation experience
- Capital accounting experience including capital financial planning and budgeting
- Experience working with operating financial planning and budget
Skills required for success:
- Knowledge and experience with Google Sheets, Docs and Slides
- Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Excel, SAP and related systems
- Thorough understanding of general accounting activities (operating and capital budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, etc.)
- Thorough knowledge of corporate and departmental policy and procedures
- Thorough knowledge of corporate financial system and inter-relationships to departmental accounting
- Significant experience and proficiency in major financial and analytical software systems
- High level analytical and conceptual skills to identify and resolve complex financial problems
- Compliance with generally accepted accounting principles, CICA Handbook, IFRS and Public Accounting Standards recommendations
- Must have a good working knowledge of most City functions and the type of work each department provides
- Strong problem solving skills and effective communication
- Excellent customer service while ensuring adherence to professional standards
- Ability to effectively communicate and maintain working relationships with all levels of management

- Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52.
- The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
