We use the term applied deliberately because our interest is working on partner-initiated projects that solve real-world challenges, and which have a clear line of sight to technology commercialization by industry or broad adoption.We have an exciting opportunity for an Applied Research Chair that will use their data management and science experience to help industrial and community partners with their research and development challenges. The Applied Research Chair will be a strategic leader in the NAIT Applied Technologies Research portfolio, which is home to a diverse array of teams led by talented Applied Research Chairs in Agri-Food Sustainability, Grid Innovation, and Industrial Automation.The successful candidate will lead the Centre Data Management and Visualization, which is home to an innovative team with expertise in geographic information systems, life-cycle assessments, carbon accounting, data science, applied statistics and simulation. The research program will be aided by generous support from the Shaw Family Foundation, but the Centre works with a broad range of partners, including small to large companies, as well as Indigenous communities, to help support and resolve their data challenges. The Centre consists of several collaborative and interdisciplinary projects within NAIT Applied Research, where the team’s data knowledge is leveraged to provide data insights and analyses across the portfolio. You will be expected to apply your expertise to work very closely with the other Applied Research Chairs to meet the innovative needs of our partners.Key Responsibilities:Provide a strategic vision on how to maintain and grow this research programApply industry knowledge and draw on experience to advance Applied Research’s goals regarding cleaner energy and environmental sustainabilityEngage with industry to identify research needs and projects, staying current with regional business trendsSecure and manage a mix of private and government funding to support research operations and capital projectsProvide scientific direction to a large and varied portfolio of projectsCollaborate with other Applied Research Chairs in prioritizing resource allocationsMentor junior staff as they develop project deliverables, milestones and budgets, and then as they execute on projectsLead the hiring, training and development of research and technical staffCommunicate with internal and external stakeholders, including academic schools, communities, government and industrySupport credit and non-credit curricula development as a subject matter expertSkills & Abilities:Experience in data management and analysisStrong understanding of data visualization and simulation, strongly preferredExceptional connectivity to industry in Western CanadaExceptional and demonstrable leadership skillsExceptional communication, both written and verbal, and ability to understand the needs of customersExperience in presenting technical content to varied audiencesExperience in business case development, proposal development and securing significant levels of project fundingQualifications:
