Bantrel performs design and procurement services from our Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto offices and delivers construction management and self perform construction services at various Client sites across Canada.Our global reach and local touch is demonstrated by our affiliation with our parent company, Bechtel Corporation, one of the largest EPC companies in the world, and with McCaig Investments, a Canadian owned private company with longstanding ties to the local business community.Job DescriptionHatch and Bantrel have formed the Hatch Bantrel Joint Venture (HBJV) to execute engineering and construction on the BHP Jansen Potash Mine Project in Saskatchewan. After successfully completing the Definition Phase Study for the project, the HBJV is currently carrying out the Detailed Engineering Phase for the Processing, Non-Process Infrastructure (NPI) and Mining Areas of the 4.5 Mtpa Stage 1 Potash Mine. With a published TIC of US $5.3-5.7 Billion this will represent one of the largest projects and private investments in Canada. The HBJV will use a hybrid of best-in-class new developing technologies and systems as well as the proven HBJV suite of tools to execute this exciting project.The Deputy Construction Manager will report to the Construction Manager and will primarily handle construction management matters related to non-process infrastructure. This includes developing work plans, preparing reports, monitoring performance, and managing procurement. The role will encompass activities within an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Management (EPCM) framework, such as executing contracts, supervising construction, and overseeing contractors for specific project sections.The deputy Construction Manager will be part of a dynamic group responsible for various business functions. They will support and uphold HBJV’s core values and be in charge of field operations, acting as a leader, coach, negotiator, and arbitrator. The leadership displayed by this individual is crucial to the project’s performance.
- Please note this position is not eligible for a relocation subsidy or living out allowance. This will be a camp position on a 14 day on 7 days off rotation. In this full-time permanent role, you will be a champion of .
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead project team for HSE performance, including contractors.
- Communicates the vision to the team for project planning, coordination, sequencing, and site resources utilization.
- Manages general superintendents and project construction coordinators. Develops objectives/goals of each assigned individual.
- Fosters and enhances client, contractors, and vendors relations.
- Ensure proper and effective coordination with HBJV Field Engineering, Site Material Management, Contracts, Project Controls, Quality, HSE, Common Services and Commissioning.
- Supports and drives utilization of project’s initiatives (i.e., digital delivery, WorkFace Planning) and technology systems.
- Ensure logistical interfaces and delivery of materials are properly coordinated.
- Actively participating / supporting in incident investigations and reporting.
- Assess construction schedule, taking into accounts any elements that might impact the schedule. Communicates with Construction Manager, general superintendents and contractors to assist them in working to the agreed project schedule.
- Provides guidance and overview of general superintendent, look ahead scheduling and planning. Reviews and assists team with developing planning and makes certain plan is communicated throughout the project team.
- Provides input to the Project Controls team.
- Ensures that work performed is consistent with the contract and will meet or exceed client expectations.
- Ensures regular feedback is shared with subordinates, including timely completion of employee performance appraisals.
- Address problems/issues promptly to facilitate the most cost-effective solutions.
- Communicates issues, events, performance, schedule adherence and progress to the Construction Manager and other project stakeholders.
- Works with Construction Manager to identify and resolve personnel issues and construction process / SOP’s revisions.
Qualifications
- Minimum 10 years onsite experience as a construction manager.
- SMPEI (structural, mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumentation) experience required for construction.
- Involvement in at least one significant project similar in size, scope, and location as the assignment being considered.
- Ability to operate effectively in a team environment.
- Ability to professionally manage and resolve contractor issues to avoid further conflict escalation.
