Use your innovative thinking and keen understanding of your business partner’s operations to provide timely, meaningful and accurate financial information.Within the Financial and Corporate Services Department, you will be part of the Business Financial Analytics team supporting the financial needs of one of our various client areas within the City as they strive to create a safe, healthy, and vibrant city.
Reporting to the Finance Manager and supporting the Senior Accountant, this position is responsible for delivering activities associated with the preparation of complex financial analytics and contributing to the development of financial recommendations or advice provided to clients in support of their operations.What will you do?
- Provide support to Senior Accountant/Finance Manager and operations by gathering data and developing spreadsheet reports for budget proposals
- Participate in the review of proposed operating service packages developed as part of the Operating Budget process, for reasonableness and completeness
- Consult with Operations to confirm requirements of budget adjustments, validate need for change and identify if there are alternatives or other funding sources available
- Initiate approval process, ensuring justification and support for the change is documented through budget adjustment working papers
- Perform budget consolidation and update information in COBS (usually submitted by the Senior Accountant to Operations to prepare all supporting documentation)
- Perform financial evaluation on the monthly operating results, providing detailed analysis and working with the client area to complete variance analysis
- Contribute to the development of new corporate processes/procedures required as a result of system and organizational changes
- Perform additional duties as required
Qualifications
- Minimum degree from a recognized post secondary institute with a major in Accounting
- A Canadian Professional Designation (or designation recognized by CPA Canada) CPA, CA, CMA, CGA is required
- Minimum three (3) years of progressively responsible related accounting experience preferably within the public sector environment, and in roles performing financial analytics. Experience working with financial planning and budgeting would be an asset
- Candidates with less than the required experience and/or education requirements may be considered at an opportunity concept level
Opportunity Concept level:
- University Degree (bachelor or applied) in accounting-related discipline working towards a recognized accounting designation (e.g. either eligible or accepted into CPA program) and one (1) year of progressively responsible full cycle (month-end and year-end accounting, budgeting and variance analysis) accounting experience OR recognized Canadian accounting designation (CPA/CA/CMA/CGA) without the requisite year of experience
- Incumbents must obtain Job Level qualifications within five (5) years’ from position start date
- Incumbents will be required to sign off on Terms and Conditions along with the union, as per the Collective Agreement
Assets:
- A knowledge of the corporate financial system (SAP) and its interrelationship to departmental accounting operations would be an asset
Skills required for success:
- Possess strong communication skills to build effective working relationships with business partners and to provide guidance and instruction to peers in the organization
- Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, requirements and practices
- Ability to think logically and complete work with a high degree of accuracy
- Ability to make decisions and problem solve independently within the scope of the position
- Strong Google Sheets, Excel, Word, SAP and major financial software experience are required
- Highly developed analytical and conceptual skills for application in a complex financial environment
- Effective prioritization and organizational skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including experience with business cases and report writing

Salary Range: $40.727 – $51.131 (Hourly); $85,037.980 – $106,761.530 (Annually)
