For more information about the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation please visit our website at: .The Trade, Investment and Food Safety Division expands and diversifies Alberta’s food and bio-product manufacturing sector in local and global markets while also providing effective food safety assurance systems.The Food and Bio-Processing Branch (FBPB) provides scientific and technical expertise, business development services and specialized facilities to support product/process development, scale up and commercialization of food and non-food products for companies serving local, national, and global markets.Role ResponsibilitiesAlberta’s government sees agriculture as a key economic driver for growth in Alberta. To successfully grow the agriculture industry in Alberta, Alberta’s government offers a range of services and programs to support the growth of the agriculture industry. Reporting to the Manager, Business Development, Food Science and Development Section, the Business Development Officer provides specialized knowledge and business information to food processors, senior executives and Ministry staff, other government agencies and industry organizations.The Business Development Officer is primarily responsible for coaching existing and new agri-processors engaged with government “centres of excellence” to pursue business opportunities that contribute to growth of a globally competitive and sustainable agri-processing industry. This involves business consultations, special projects and feasibility assessments requiring significant technology transfer, problem solving, decision making and business communication skills.Expertise addresses business management, market development, processing, and regulatory issues that contribute to the development of sector specific processing companies. This specialist represents the department in interdepartmental work teams and external committees. Additional Requirements:
- Relevant work experience with the food processing industry
- valid Class 5 Driver’s License are required.
Assets:
- Demonstrated tact, judgement, negotiation and troubleshooting skills, along with strong project management skills, oral and written communication skills.
- Understanding of business management, business planning, marketing, accounting, economics, principles of food safety and food processing technology.
- Specific and detailed knowledge in food processing sectors.
- Skilled at coaching client progress and in development of business relationships.
- Knowledge of pertinent legislation having an impact on the agri-processing industry (Business Licensing, Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act/Regulations, Food and Drug Act/Regulations and Provincial Food Regulations).
- Broad knowledge of the food processing industry including supply chain, infrastructure, transportation, distribution, retail, wholesale and food service operations.
- Ability to analyze situations, solve problems and make decisions.
- Consulting skills, ability to facilitate strategic alliances, business relationships and networks.
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to lead working groups and to be an effective team player.
- Computer skills include word processing, spreadsheets, database, electronic communication and social media.
Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower classification and salary.Minimum recruitment standards outline the minimum education and experience required for appointment to a job classification.

- Monday to Friday (08:15 am-16:30 pm)
- Evening and weekend work is sometimes required
- Travel: valid driver’s license is required for travel (Canada)
