Job DutiesSupervision and Leadership:
- Supervise and coordinate activities of carpenters and apprentices on-site.
- Provide leadership and guidance to ensure tasks are completed safely, on time, and within budget.
- Assign tasks and oversee work progress to meet project deadlines.
Project Planning and Coordination:
- Participate in project planning meetings to understand scope, objectives, and requirements.
- Coordinate with project managers, contractors, and other trades to schedule work and resources effectively.
- Ensure materials and equipment are available as needed for carpentry tasks.
Quality Control and Inspection:
- Inspect work to ensure it meets quality standards, building codes, and specifications.
- Provide feedback and training to carpenters to maintain high standards of workmanship.
- Identify and resolve any issues or deficiencies in carpentry work promptly.
Safety and Compliance:
- Enforce safety protocols and regulations to maintain a safe work environment.
- Conduct regular safety meetings and inspections to address potential hazards.
- Ensure all carpentry work complies with OH&S and other safety regulations.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of work progress, materials used, and employee attendance.
- Prepare daily reports, including work completed, issues encountered, and upcoming tasks.
- Communicate project status and any deviations from plans to project managers and supervisors.
Training and Development:
- Mentor and train apprentices and junior carpenters in proper techniques and safety practices.
- Provide ongoing feedback and opportunities for skill development.
- Encourage a culture of continuous learning and improvement within the carpentry team.
Problem Solving and Decision Making:
- Address challenges and resolve conflicts that arise during construction projects.
- Make decisions regarding work methods, priorities, and resource allocation.
- Collaborate with other supervisors and trades to achieve project goals effectively.
Customer Relations:
- Interact with clients, architects, and engineers as needed to clarify project requirements.
- Ensure client satisfaction by delivering high-quality carpentry work and addressing any concerns promptly.
- Represent the company professionally and maintain positive relationships with stakeholders.
Budget and Cost Control:
- Monitor project expenses related to carpentry work and materials.
- Identify opportunities for cost savings without compromising quality or safety.
- Report budget variances and propose adjustments as necessary.
Adherence to Policies and Procedures:
- Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and standards of conduct.
- Uphold ethical standards and promote a respectful work environment.
- Encourage teamwork and collaboration among carpentry crew members.
Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills and AbilitiesQualifications:Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of a carpentry apprenticeship program certified by the province or proven equivalent hours of work in the trade.
Certifications:
- Red Seal endorsement or Journeyman certification as a Carpenter is an asset.
- Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) certification/training is an asset.
- First Aid/CPR certification is an asset.
- Fall Arrest and/or Scaffold certification is an asset.
- WHMIS certification.
Knowledge:Carpentry Skills:
- Proficient in all aspects of carpentry work, including framing, finishing, cabinetry, and formwork.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications.
Construction Practices:
- Knowledge of construction techniques, materials, and tools commonly used in carpentry.
- Understanding of building codes, regulations, and safety standards applicable in PEI.
Project Management:
- Basic understanding of project management principles, including scheduling, budgeting, and resource allocation.
Skills:Leadership and Supervision:
- Strong leadership skills to supervise and coordinate a team of carpenters effectively.
- Ability to delegate tasks, provide guidance, and motivate team members.
Communication:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact with team members, clients, and other stakeholders.
- Ability to convey instructions clearly and resolve conflicts diplomatically.
Problem-Solving:
- Critical thinking skills to assess situations, identify issues, and implement effective solutions.
- Ability to troubleshoot technical problems related to carpentry work.
Organizational Skills:
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks, prioritize workloads, and meet deadlines.

- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy materials and working in various weather conditions.
