Your role will also include supporting other Waste Management projects for public and private sector clients. This position offers a unique opportunity to work with an energetic and high-performing team while gaining valuable experience in both civil and environmental engineering disciplines. As part of your role, you will work as a solid waste engineer for the BC First Nations Zero Waste Program to support our work with the Indigenous Zero Waste Technical Advisory Group (IZWTAG), Indigenous Services Canada (ISC), and over 50 First Nations in BC to improve solid waste infrastructure, including transfer stations, recycling depots and landfill facilities, and implement new garbage recycling and compost programs, while promoting environmental sustainability and supporting community waste management initiatives.This is a full-time position that will be based out of our Vancouver office and includes travel across BC for field work at various project sites. - Work directly with our First Nation clients and IZWTAG, to help find and implement the best solid waste systems for their communities, acting as a project coordinator.
- Collaborate with senior engineers and project managers on project planning, design and implementation and construction contract administration of transfer stations, composting facilities, and landfills in rural and remote communities, with the opportunity to transition to the role of project manager.
- Assist in preparing and submitting funding requests to ISC on behalf of First Nations to secure funding for feasibility, design, and construction of solid waste projects (e.g. Transfer stations, landfill closures, improvement of recycling and compost systems)
- Coordinate with contractors during the construction phase of solid waste projects including review and issuing of change orders, submittals, requests for Information, progress payments and other contract documents.
- Conduct construction inspections and chair construction progress meetings.
- Coordinate technical resources and personnel including drafters, 3D designers, GIS and database technicians, electrical engineers, structural engineers, geotechnical engineers, hydrologists, hydrogeologists, biologists, and planners to complete waste management facility designs and plans
- Complete quantity take-offs and cost estimates.
- Prepare or assist in preparing technical reports, design drawings & specifications, and construction contracts, under senior supervision.
- Manage project schedules, budgets, and invoices throughout the feasibility, design and construction phases of the project.
- Contribute to waste management projects, for example, design of anaerobic digestion & renewable natural gas facilities, advanced thermal conversion facilities, and landfill gas generation assessment.
Environmental
- Carry-out environmental investigations and monitoring field work on landfill sites which may include drilling, soil sampling, well installation, groundwater sampling, surface water sampling, excavation and soil vapour sampling. May also be involved with well development, single well response testing, or other field activities.
- Review and interpret of environmental data based on laboratory analytical results.
- Assist in project set up, project coordination, data assessment, reporting activities, and compiling and managing field data.
General
- Collaborate and build working relationships with our GHD network of engineers, scientists, subcontractors and clients.
- Effectively communicate with existing and prospective clients, vendors, subcontractors, and/or agencies.
- Coordinate and schedule subcontractors’ services.
- Assist in monitoring projects budgets and schedules to ensure timely and cost-effective project delivery.
- Assist in preparation of proposals and cost estimates.
- Adhere to GHD and client’s safety requirements.
Skills, Competencies and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering engineering.
- 0-3 years of experience in environmental consulting and/or related work experience, will be an asset.
- EIT (Engineer-in-Training) certification or eligibility to obtain certification.
- Knowledge of waste management principles and practices, including landfill design, waste management facility layout, waste characterization, and recycling processes.
- Familiarity with environmental regulations and permitting processes related to waste management projects, including the BC Landfill Criteria for Municipal Solid Waste.
- Knowledge of civil design software packages such as AutoCAD and Civil3D
- Valid class 5 driver’s license with driving record in good standing.
- Willingness to travel and work flexible hours as required.
- Ability to work independently in remote and challenging field conditions.
- Strong work ethic with genuine interest in environmental consulting, waste management and working with Indigenous communities.
- Understanding of Indigenous culture, community dynamics, and the importance of cultural sensitivity in project implementation. Experience working with Indigenous communities or on Indigenous-related projects is an asset.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills with the ability to effectively interact with diverse stakeholders.
