A proud part of the Taggart Group of Companies, we value integrity, quality, and community.Work DescriptionThe Construction Superintendent is responsible for the overall supervision of construction projects, crews, and sub-contractors. The Construction Superintendent in coordination with the VP of Operations and the Project Manager is responsible for identifying issues, designing, and carrying out policies and procedures that support the projects and initiatives of the company.Major Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and manage the construction site from the set-up phase, including establishing structures and processes for the site office, access points, and site fencing, through to the project’s completion and handover.
  • Assist the Project Manager in developing and maintaining construction production schedule and site management plan. Provide schedule updates to the Project Manager on a regular basis.
  • Review and understand project drawings and specifications and address any discrepancies by reporting them to the Project Manager.
  • Schedule meetings with and manage subcontractors. Coordinate all activity between trades and suppliers.
  • Oversee performance of all trade contractors to ensure architectural and engineering drawings are being delivered with accuracy and to regulatory standards.
  • Establish and maintain quality control measures on site.
  • Conduct daily toolbox talks and ensure all subcontractors submit daily hazard assessments.
  • Participate in setting up the site safety plan with the Corporate Safety Officer (CSO).
  • Participate in all Safety reporting functions. Ensure the timely delivery of safety reports to Corporate Safety Officer to maintain all legislative requirements.
  • Verify all onsite safety training for all new hires, including employees, trades and contractors. Ensuring all documentation is prepared and submitted as required in conjunction with Project Coordinators and CSO.
  • Plan and prepare three-week construction schedule look ahead, including milestones, and monitor progress against established schedules.
  • Ensure accurate and timely project close date; adjust working schedules to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Ensure inspections are completed periodically throughout the construction phases to ensure buildings meet specifications of clients.
  • Identify and resolve conflicts within project teams and associated work; create contingency plans to mitigate risk.
  • Recommending employee actions such as hiring, training, promotions, disciplinary and corrective measures to the VP of Operations and/or Project Manager.
  • Enforce all Doran Contractor policies and procedures.
  • All other duties as required.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Post-secondary Certificate in Civil Engineering Technologist, Engineering Degree or other formal technical training that is relevant to the field.
  • A minimum of ten years of work experience as a Construction Superintendent in the ICI sector, with demonstrated increased responsibility/supervisory work.
  • Prior experience with construction projects in ICI, such as condominiums, multi-story retirement homes, multi-unit apartment buildings, retail developments, large commercial turn-key buildings, commercial fit-ups or other similar projects is an asset.
  • A valid driver’s license is required as this requires travel to and from sites to the office.
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, field drawings and plans.
  • Strong communication, integration, problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated success in project delivery and execution of project management methods. Understanding fundamentals of contracts and experience in managing contractors under the terms of a contract
