Job description: Construction SuperintendentKelowna, BCAbout the client:Our client is a leading general, civil, and industrial contracting company offering professional and high-standard services to the construction industry in British Columbia. They have multiple offices and are adding a Light Civil Superintendent (underground utilities) based in either Vernon or Kelowna, BC. This is a full-time, permanent position.The Superintendent will report to the Project Manager, Civil Department, and will be responsible for the field planning, management and execution of assigned Civil Contracting projects. The new hire will ensure that all on-site construction is completed in full accordance with plans, specifications, and good construction practices. They will provide personal leadership to create positive and productive relationships with all internal and external parties to maximize project performance and results.Responsibilities:

  • Participate in regular meetings with project teams to review progress, address issues, and plan resources.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, new techniques, and emerging technologies, and present ideas to the Project Manager.
  • Develop expertise in construction contracts, drawings, safety standards, and client-specific requirements.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with subcontractors and suppliers for effective project execution.
  • Review project documentation and perform constructability analysis before project start-up.
  • Identify and address field conditions or client requests that impact scope, cost, or rates, and propose actions.
  • Coordinate with Project Manager and Human Resources to select suitable Forepersons for projects.
  • Prepare resource plans and project schedules, and review with Project Manager and Project Coordinator.
  • Lead project start-up meetings to confirm scope, schedule, and construction plans.
  • Identify and apply for necessary permits and manage project site logistics.
  • Provide input on design and construction reviews and conduct site visits to evaluate conditions.
  • Set up the site office, including signage, facilities, and safety materials.
  • Oversee safety plans and procedures, ensuring compliance with HSE standards.
  • Manage material and equipment purchases and monitor third-party provider performance and costs.
  • Document daily project activities, including manpower, materials, and work progress.
  • Conduct regular site inspections to ensure quality, safety, and adherence to plans.
  • Coordinate with clients, manage fieldwork orders, and handle project changes.
  • Support and mentor Foreperson, handle conflicts, and ensure productivity and safety.
  • Review and approve time sheets, manage budgets, and provide updates on project progress.
  • Lead, develop, and evaluate direct reports, ensuring compliance with HR policies.
  • Prepare and review Standard Operating Procedures for all project site personnel.
  • Schedule and chair site meetings with personnel and subcontractors to review progress and issues.
  • Conduct a bi-weekly 3-week look-ahead to update schedules and material/subcontractor requirements.
  • Ensure accurate recording of all job-related information and documentation.
  • Review and approve expense reports and manage field personnel vacation schedules.
  • Maintain confidentiality of corporate and client information.
  • Coordinate equipment utilization and relocation with Project Manager.
  • Initiate and document field testing processes, such as compaction and concrete testing.
  • Oversee the removal and return of all project equipment and tools at completion.
  • Ensure compliance with safety performance standards and report any incidents.
  • Conduct substantial completion meetings with clients, complete deficiencies, and secure sign-off.
  • Assist in the preparation of project as-builts and manage equipment utilization studies.
  • Support and promote HSE initiatives and attend toolbox meetings.
  • Attend client meetings to communicate field perspectives and resolve issues.
  • Provide input on any project fieldwork areas of potential problems or difficulty; knowledge of existing conditions & details; drawings and specifications ambiguities at project start and requests clarifications.
  • Develop a clear understanding of the scope of work to quickly identify any field conditions or client requests for field work that are “out of contract”, or create additional costs or required new rates, etc. for the company.
  • Demonstrate and implement company’s core values of Ambitious, Respectful, Competent, Engaged, and Supportive throughout projects, along with standards of business conduct and human resource philosophies.

Qualifications:

  • 10 to 15 years of construction experience.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in a senior site supervisor role, preferably as a Superintendent or equivalent, with proven experience in managing projects valued at $2 million or more.
  • Relationships with Thompson Okanagan area subtrades is an asset.
  • Gold Seal Certification, or equivalent.
  • Uncompromising integrity and drive.
  • Performance management experience.

What our client offers:

  • $110,000-135,000

Expected salary: $110000 – 135000 per year
