Position Number: 00049568Description:About us:University Planning, Design and Construction provides the University with support through two key services: University Planning and Project Management, Design and Engineering and Project Development. The team is responsible for campus master planning, space allocation, design & engineering services, costing, leasing, and all construction and renovation projects.Your opportunity:Under the general direction of the Associate Director and working with the assigned Project Manager, the Construction Technician undertakes components of construction and renovation projects on all three campuses at the University of Toronto, monitoring project performance, schedule, costs, staffing levels, safety and quality control.The Construction Technician is assigned to assist the Project Manager (PM) on large scale new build or significant renovations projects that include, but are not limited to: labs, office renovations with single department/group occupant, teaching facilities, student services, various renovations within heritage buildings which require City and U of T Planning involvement as well as heritage consultants, electrical service upgrades to several buildings, and code upgrades in multiple buildings.Responsibilities within projects may include, but are not limited to, arranging service and utility shut downs for floors, buildings or geographical areas by liaising with UT and external providers, coordinating occupancy, regular site attendance to review progress arranging for and completing construction deficiencies, and final close-out of the project (financial and administrative). The Construction Technician, at the request of the PM, and upon approval of the Associate Director, may be required to act for the PM in a limited capacity or under specific circumstances.The Construction Technician will have a breadth of knowledge gained by their experience and diploma in engineering or architectural discipline, providing the incumbent strong technical knowledge and understanding of architectural structures, buildings, mechanical and electrical systems and related design drawings. They must exercise sound judgment and initiative. The incumbent works with the PM to arrange correspondence, meetings and follow-up activities. Decisions having an impact on project budget, schedule or quality, are referred to the PM.This position will require travel between University Campuses and/or to consultant/supplier offices. A valid Ontario Class ‘G’ driver’s license and access to a vehicle is required.We will consider applicants with Advanced College Diploma (3 years) in construction related engineering or architecture discipline or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.Your responsibilities will include:
- Developing project schedules including milestones, critical path, timelines, deliverables and reporting
- Conducting final inspection of work completed by contractors
- Preparing project deficiency lists
- Keeping well-informed of the Ontario Building Code
- Performing a technical comparison of CAD drawings and mechanical/electrical elements of buildings for compatibility
- Providing detailed explanations on findings and outcomes of site visits
- Ensuring adherence to Health & Safety standards and regulations by others on construction sites
- Planning and controlling expenditures on many accounts for construction projects
Essential Qualifications:
- Advanced College Diploma (3 years) in construction related engineering or architecture discipline or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
- Minimum six to seven years of experience in the following:
- Construction experience working on industrial/commercial/institutional (ICI) projects; related experience in design,
- Reviewing construction scopes, activities, scheduling, project and contract management,
- Knowledge of different construction methods, sequencing and timelines,
- Ability to read design drawings and conceptualize details as they would be built in the field anticipating buildability and sequencing issues,
- Knowledge of relevant construction law and building, fire and safety codes,
- Computer-based project scheduling/management experience (e.g. MS Project).
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Project and working knowledge of AutoCaD, BIM and or Revit.
- Demonstrated organization, project management and leadership skills.
- Budget management skills; proven ability to manage multiple projects within strict budget and timelineconstraints.
- Superior oral and written communications skills; superior interpersonal skills and ability to influence.
- Knowledge of Health & Safety regulations and legislation, including OHSA, WHMIS.
- Proven ability to respond to frequently changing priorities.
- An understanding of the legislative boundaries and ethical requirements that govern these professions (licensed engineers and architects) in addition to the technical knowledge to understand design drawings prepared by professional licensed engineers and architects.
