Reporting to the Vice President, Corporate Finance, the Controller will play a key role maintaining the financial health and integrity of the company while working closely with the Vice President and the rest of the finance team to advance strategic initiatives for the department and business.This is a dynamic, challenging, and visible role that will grow in scope and responsibility over time. The incumbent must posses a strong technical foundation (trust accounting, financial statement preparation, financial analysis, control frameworks), be organized, and comfortable overseeing all banking and reconciliation activity within the Company’s trust account. The incumbent is comfortable problem solving independently and collaborating with other teams or departments within the Company. A team of Accounting Analysts will report to the Controller. Familiarity with enterprise-grade accounting software is required.The Role· Lead the month-end financial close process in accordance with Canadian GAAP.· Maintain trust accounts, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and internal policies (e.g., monthly trust reconciliations).· Provide accounting oversight on all aspects of mortgage origination, administration, and servicing (reviewing loan discharges, fundings, etc.)· Maintain integrity of all financial data housed in the Company’s loan management system.· Oversee team of accountants responsible for accounts payable, general ledger, accounts receivable, balance sheet, stakeholder communications, and trust account operations.· Manage the Company’s financial and payment control frameworks, reviewing and operationalizing key controls.· Implement accounting processes to enhance efficiency and accuracy.· Lead process optimization efforts with the Company’s accounting software (NetSuite).· Maintain the Company’s accounting policies, provide expertise on complex accounting.· Oversee tax filings and CRA access, liaise with stakeholders (auditors, tax accountants).· Assist with the annual external audit, managing timing of key deliverables.· Work with the Vice President to advance strategic projects for the business.· Responsible for providing regular coaching and mentorship for the Accounting team.· Oversee the Accounting team’s annual performance reviews, including delivery of reviews.· Drive the Accounting team towards success through creation, development, assignment, and execution of team OKRs.· Provide the Senior Leadership Team with departmental KPI updates on a regular basis.What Are We Looking For?· Minimum 8 years of progressive professional work experience in accounting or controllership roles.· Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation, with large accounting firm experience preferred.· Background in financial services or experience with trust accounting.· Attention to detail, organized, and a strong communicator.· Experience leading or managing direct reports and/or team members.· A desire to pursue a challenging career in real estate finance.· Will be required to obtain mortgage agent license (paid for by MarshallZehr).Preferred Requirements· Experience with NetSuite accounting software is a plus.· Experience in (or having worked with clients in) real estate or mortgage debt industries considered an asset.Work Environment· MZ offices are open Monday to Friday and employees are expected to work on site a minimum of 4 days per week, with the option of working remotely 1 day per week, as agreed to by the direct supervisor.· Our Waterloo office has 16,000 square feet of modern and accessible space and has been specially updated and tailored to meet our business needs.
