The Ministry of Energy and Minerals is responsible for sustaining the interests of Albertans through the stewardship and responsible development of energy and mineral resource systems.For more information on the work of our Ministry, please visit: .The Energy Transition Division leads policy development for Alberta’s energy transition, tackling economic and policy barriers to new energy investments. The division strategically engages with stakeholders, including the energy and minerals industry, the Federal Government, and other provinces, to support Alberta’s goal of reducing emissions and achieving net-zero by 2050. Key responsibilities include providing secretariat and strategic support to negotiation tables, sub-tables, and internal committees, facilitating discussions on policy priorities and timelines to achieve a carbon-neutral economy and economic prosperity by 2050. The division is also responsible for nuclear policy and implementing the critical minerals strategy and action plan.Role ResponsibilitiesThe Energy Transition Division under the Ministry of Energy & Minerals is currently seeking an agile and driven Senior Manager to join their team to drive key initiatives advancing policy development around emerging resources including critical minerals and nuclear.As the Director of Business Relationships & Implementation, you will assist the Executive Director in leading a team of professionals focused on developing strategic engagement with various stakeholders, including members of the energy and minerals industry, the Federal Government, and other provinces. Your primary goal will be to reduce emissions and achieve net zero status by 2050. Additionally, you will support Alberta’s transition to a low-carbon energy jurisdiction by attracting investment in emerging energy technologies and opportunities. You will also contribute to the secretariat’s work with industry on negotiating tables involving bilateral, trilateral, and Ammonia Transportation Trilateral Pathways.The Director oversees all aspects of program delivery and issue resolution while collaborating with the management team in the Branch. You will be looked upon to conduct long-term environmental scanning and risk management to understand emerging decarbonization technologies, manufacturing opportunities, threats and risk as well as ensure Alberta’s competitiveness in attracting investments in low carbon energy opportunities. In addition, you will be relied upon to collaborate and influence broader and regulatory and program policy options.The successful candidate will support Energy Transition Emerging Resources in developing and improving regulatory regimes to incentivize investment in hydrogen, ammonia, helium, lithium, liquefied natural gas, geothermal and mineral development in the province.It is critical that the Director can anticipate, quickly adapt, take advantage of opportunities, and make effective decisions. QualificationsMinimum University graduation in Business, Public Policy, Public Administration, Environmental Science, Economics, or a related field supplemented by seven years progressively responsible experience in policy administration, strategic stakeholder engagement, leadership, and management.Equivalencies may be considered. Directly related education or experience considered based on:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
The following are considered as assets:
- Master’s degree in a related field (e.g., business administration, economics, accounting, or finance).
- Prior experience working in the energy and minerals industry or related ministries and agencies.
- Experience interpreting and implementing legislation, regulations, and policies related to energy transition, and related topics (e.g. Mines and Minerals Act, Energy Transition and Climate Policy, and all Acts and regulations applicable to responsible energy development and environmental protection across the GOA. etc.) to provide feasible recommendations to Management and executive leadership.
- Sound understanding and experience in applying knowledge of provincial, national, and international issues, trends, and drivers in the Energy Transition space to support decision making.
- Experience managing a large and diverse group of staff.
