For more information on the ALSS Ministry, please visit:Role ResponsibilitiesThe Corporate Finance and Accountability Division within the Ministry of ALSS has an exciting opportunity for a strategic and results-oriented leader with a strong commitment to accountability and risk management. As the Director, Internal Audit, you will lead a team for professionals responsible for delivering comprehensive internal audit services across the Ministry.Reporting to the Executive Director, Corporate Accountability and Planning, you will provide leadership, oversight, and strategic direction to the Internal Audit function. You will ensure that effective internal controls, risk assessments, and compliance processes are in place and functioning properly. You will foster collaborative relationships with senior management and external auditors, drive continuous improvement in audit practices, and contribute to the Ministry’s commitment to sound financial stewardship and operational excellence.Role Responsibilities Con’tKey Responsibilities:Provide strategic direction for the Internal Audit function to ensure Ministry risks are effectively managed and there is accountability for public funds.
Engage senior leadership to identify risks across the Ministry and develop a comprehensive, risk-based Annual Audit Plan for Executive Team approval.Direct Internal Audit services for the Ministry.
Oversee audit priorities and develop detailed work plans. Ensure audit procedures assess controls, compliance, and risks. Use professional judgment for high-risk audits and practical solutions.
Ensure recommendations for control weaknesses are implemented quickly. Provide clear and balanced audit reports. Guide the audit team to keep work focused and effective.
Manage resources, including staff support, budget, and office administration. Participate in Ministry planning to align audit activities with policies and goals.Develop constructive and positive working relationships with program management, external auditors and initiate regular communication.
Maintain strong knowledge of departmental functions, consider sensitivities in interactions, and coordinate with management to minimize scheduling conflicts.
Serve as the key liaison to coordinate audit projects and resource sharing among Internal Audit, Corporate Finance, Delivery Services, external auditors, and other stakeholders; support committees and prepare regular status updates on outstanding recommendations.Develop and maintain a positive and productive work environment for Internal Audit staff.
Ensure Internal Audit staff act in accordance with Alberta Public Service Vision and Values, understand their contribution to Ministry goals, and receive appropriate training, tools, and support.
Provide oversight of performance planning, recruitment, coaching, and mentoring; evaluate team effectiveness and foster peer support and communication.Create an environment that promotes continuous improvement.
