Job description: Bear Tracks Environmental Services (2015) Ltd. is seeking a full-time, permanent Environment Manager to join our fast-growing team in 2025.Founded as a biological consulting firm in 2006, Bear Tracks’ experience portfolio has since grown to include an array of environmental consulting services, allowing us to meet the various needs of our industry and government clientele.Wanting to be part of a vibrant team is a must. We take our work seriously, but fully understand that people have lives outside of their job. We like to keep it light, while providing an amazing product for our clients. This may not work for all companies, but it’s worked well for us.The successful candidate will be responsible for direct oversight of the consulting team and the operations of the organization. This includes but is not limited to scheduling, administration, project management, communications and supervision of staff. The successful individual must be highly organized, able to work in a fast-paced environment, and have a proven ability to successfully lead a team of individuals. Additionally, the successful individual must be able to develop and plan environmental field survey programs in accordance with applicable provincial survey protocols and have a detailed understanding of environmental consulting (particularly natural science disciplines).Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:Resource & Workflow Management:

  • Oversee the planning, organization and management of a diverse array of projects, people and tasks
  • Make critical decisions on resource allocation, scheduling and/or procedural changes.
  • Allocate resources (personnel, equipment, budget) to ensure optimal operations
  • Accountable for accurate scheduling and staff selection for new/current projects based on consultation with staff directly managing project delivery.
  • Ensure operations are cost effective while maintaining quality and performance standards
  • Provide feedback and suggestions for operational improvements to senior leaders.
  • Identify and address operational/resource gaps
  • Forecast resource needs based on potential work (ex. subcontractor determination)
  • Oversee the overall status and success of projects to ensure all deliverables are met (Ex. proper resourcing, report/communication requirements, positive client relations, project is within budget), alongside staff directly managing project delivery.
  • Foster and nurture client relationships by ensuring exceptional service, addressing client concerns, and providing tailored solutions to meet their needs.

Team Leadership & Supervision:

  • Lead and manage staff members
  • Motivate and support team members to ensure a positive work environment and high morale
  • Manage staff vacation approvals, personal days, sick days in conjunction with HR
  • Assign projects, tasks, set objectives and ensure deadlines are met
  • Manage professional development requests- i.e. tradeshow attendance, conferences
  • Support Controller to ensure staff comply with timesheet and overtime policies.
  • Monitor team performance and participate in performance reviews

Office Management & Job Equipment:

  • Work with senior management to ensure appropriate field equipment is available to team members (including new hires)
  • Work with staff directly managing project delivery and Controller to approve necessary business purchases

Compliance & Safety:

  • Co-chair Health and Safety Committee
  • Support team members in obtaining or maintaining essential training and skills for project work.
  • Ensure team follows workplace safety regulations and policies

Candidates will have the following qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, zoology, environmental science, or related discipline.
  • Minimum 8 plus years of field/consulting experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management (i.e. budgeting, project tracking, cost-accounting and scope control) and leading and supervising teams.
  • Strong leadership and managerial skills.
  • Strong problem solver to address challenges with effective solutions that improve systems and/or relationships and with strong strategic thinking skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects in a dynamic work environment.
  • Demonstrated skills in organization, program development and project management.
  • A quick learner of new systems, with strong computer proficiency using Microsoft Office.
  • Currently registered as a P.Biol. or P.Ag., or eligible for registration as a Professional Biologist or Professional Agrologist in Alberta.

Assets for the position include experience with or a detailed understanding of:

  • ArcGIS or QGIS
  • Sensitive Species Survey Protocols
  • Wildlife Directives for Wind and Solar Projects
  • Alberta Wetland Policy
  • Conservation and Reclamation Directive for Renewable Energy Operations
