Foote Field features competition-level artificial turf, track, and grass field, as well as a multi-use plaza, conference room, and lounge space. East facilities feature a curling rink (10 sheets) , tennis courts (8 courts), fitness centre, bar and lounge, sports performance centre, and various multi-purpose spaces. West facilities feature nine gymnasiums, a competition gym, a gymnastics centre, a fitness studio, classrooms and food, and beverage services. The sport and recreation facilities on South Campus experience over 3.4 million visits per year.Position SummaryThe Head Ice Technician provides leadership, management and supervision support to the Curling unit within Campus & Community Recreation, Campus Services, at the University of Alberta. The Head Ice Technician actively participates in the development and implementation of the strategic direction for South Campus and supports the process to develop a strategic operating model for the Curling Department. Specifically, the Head Ice Technician leads a small team of two full-time and 4 casual staff in the provision of client-focused curling services. The Head Ice Technician will support, plan and implement a unit strategy for the curling on-ice maintenance and operations within the overarching South Campus unit.Day-to-day curling program and service operations, staff development, strategic planning, and policy/procedure development are all key components of this role. The Head Ice Technician will manage and supervise the day-to-day activities of the on-ice activity within the Curling Department in an efficient and effective manner. A major focus of this position will be the development, organization and administration of all ice maintenance operations, inclusive of all on-ice and curling plant operations.The reputation of the Saville Community Sports Centre curling facility, programs and amenities is world-renowned as it caters to the recreational through to the developmental and national- elite-level curler. As one of the largest curling facilities in the world and a rink that attracts curling teams from around the world for training purposes, the facility’s ice conditions are recognized as world-class. In addition to the elite curler, the rink operations are instrumental for its own curling leagues, memberships, bookings, corporate events, varsity curling teams, events, funspiels, practice ice, school field trips, and adult programming offered at the Saville Community Sports Centre – East.The Curling Rink is currently home to 22 leagues and roughly 1000 members. The ice quality is extremely important to the overall operation of the Saville Community Sports Centre and our retention of members and bookings. The Head Ice Technician will ensure the delivery of an inclusive, equitable and diverse curling environment for all. The Curling program will provide an exceptional experience for clients in support of their goals whether that be recreational, competitive or elite curling performance.DutiesI. The Head Ice Technician, assisted by Recreation Facility Operator II, is responsible for developing short and long-term plans for the curling facility within the curling operations, including financial accounting and facility allocation/use. Activities include:

• Management of the facility’s curling-maintenance related financial accounting responsibilities, including:

• Short and long-term maintenance and capital expense planning;
• Management and coordination of all curling facility maintenance contract(s);
• Management and processing of Procurement and Contract Management forms, including all Curling- maintenance related invoices (non-purchase orders), purchase orders, direct order contracts, and monthly Mastercard reconciliation.

II. The Head Ice Technician coordinates the scheduling of on-ice bookings and maintenance within the curling program areas. Activities include:

• Coordinate the scheduling of maintenance in the curling area around regular programming with the Curling Manager.
• Providing any on-ice support required by bookings and/or organizers.
• Deliver up-to-date curling ice information to staff members and clients prior to ice usage.

III. The Head Ice Technician develops and leads all aspects of the ice-maker development program. Among such duties are:

• Develop the necessary educational materials required to instruct and educate the annual course.
• Establish the course schedule around the facility’s curling ice demands.
• Lead and supervise any exam-oriented settings related to the ice-maker course.
• Coordinate and evaluate students on the practical portion of the course.
• Evaluate programs annually to implement improvements for future programs.
• Monitors trends in the curling business in order to identify new opportunities for positive growth and development.

IV. The Head Ice Technician is responsible for all aspects of curling area maintenance, inclusive of the curling rink and curling plant. Among such duties are:

• Develops and implements the installation and maintenance procedures for a professional curling ice surface that exceeds Canadian Curling Association standards.
• Oversees and performs the complete installation of curling ice.
• Oversees and performs daily, weekly, and monthly ice maintenance procedures.
• Oversees and performs complete operation of the curling ice refrigeration plant.
• Oversees and performs complete operation of HVAC systems related to the curling area.

V. The Head Ice Technician will work with the Curling Manager on the coordination of all Curling events hosted at the U of A curling facility. Among such duties are:

• Organization of committee responsibilities related to the successful hosting of city, regional, provincial, national, and international curling events.
• Development of schedules required for ice maintenance within the tournament schedule.
• Assist in the coordination of event logistics and participate in any pre-event meetings that are appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree in Kinesiology, Recreation, and/or Sport Management
• Minimum Level 3 Certification (Level 4 preferred)
• Minimum four years of experience as a Lead/Head Ice Technician
• Proven experience in ice installation and maintenance
• High-calibre ice-making skills are required
• Experience as a crew leader for ice-making team at large events such as provincials, nationals, and/or world curling events
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in sport management, operation of curling facilities, and event logistics
• Experience in communications and risk management
• Intermediate First Aid and CPR (current within 1 year)

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous coaching experience or NCCP certification is considered an asset
• Aerial Lift Operator is an asset
• Experience with Recreation Management Software (Intelligenz) is an asset
