From group exercise to individualized personal training; from healthy living activities to physical assessments preparing for specific work environments; from recreational sports to elite sport training; and a range of ethnic and cultural dance, Campus & Community Recreation has the breadth and depth of activities to enhance the experiences of students, staff and community members alike.Campus & Community Recreation has three facilities on the University of Alberta South Campus – Saville Community Sports Centre (East and West), Foote Field and the Saville Tennis Centre. Foote Field features competition-level artificial turf, track, and grass field, as well as a multi-use plaza, conference room, and lounge space. East facilities feature a curling rink (10 sheets) , tennis courts (8 courts), fitness centre, bar and lounge, sports performance centre, and various multi-purpose spaces. West facilities feature nine gymnasiums, a competition gym, a gymnastics centre, a fitness studio, classrooms and food, and beverage services. The sport and recreation facilities on South Campus experience over 3.4 million visits per year.Position SummaryThe Head Ice Technician provides leadership, management and supervision support to the Curling unit within Campus & Community Recreation, Campus Services, at the University of Alberta. The Head Ice Technician actively participates in the development and implementation of the strategic direction for South Campus and supports the process to develop a strategic operating model for the Curling Department. Specifically, the Head Ice Technician leads a small team of two full-time and 4 casual staff in the provision of client-focused curling services. The Head Ice Technician will support, plan and implement a unit strategy for the curling on-ice maintenance and operations within the overarching South Campus unit.Day-to-day curling program and service operations, staff development, strategic planning, and policy/procedure development are all key components of this role. The Head Ice Technician will manage and supervise the day-to-day activities of the on-ice activity within the Curling Department in an efficient and effective manner. A major focus of this position will be the development, organization and administration of all ice maintenance operations, inclusive of all on-ice and curling plant operations.The reputation of the Saville Community Sports Centre curling facility, programs and amenities is world-renowned as it caters to the recreational through to the developmental and national- elite-level curler. As one of the largest curling facilities in the world and a rink that attracts curling teams from around the world for training purposes, the facility’s ice conditions are recognized as world-class. In addition to the elite curler, the rink operations are instrumental for its own curling leagues, memberships, bookings, corporate events, varsity curling teams, events, funspiels, practice ice, school field trips, and adult programming offered at the Saville Community Sports Centre – East.The Curling Rink is currently home to 22 leagues and roughly 1000 members. The ice quality is extremely important to the overall operation of the Saville Community Sports Centre and our retention of members and bookings. The Head Ice Technician will ensure the delivery of an inclusive, equitable and diverse curling environment for all. The Curling program will provide an exceptional experience for clients in support of their goals whether that be recreational, competitive or elite curling performance.DutiesI. The Head Ice Technician, assisted by Recreation Facility Operator II, is responsible for developing short and long-term plans for the curling facility within the curling operations, including financial accounting and facility allocation/use.
