Job description: POSITION SUMMARY
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is an autonomous health care provider who will be working collaboratively with the interprofessional Surgical Department to support clinical care. The NP will be applying an expanded range of theoretical, practical and evidence-informed therapeutics to patients. The General Surgery NP will be authorized to perform extended health services which include comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, intervention, referral, management, and evaluation of patient care across the continuum of acute health services. Utilizing advanced nursing knowledge, skill, clinical reasoning, problem solving and critical thinking, all duties and responsibilities will follow the NP Standards of Practice set by the College of Nurses of Ontario, and Standards of Behaviour set by St. Joseph’s Healthcare.
St Joseph’s Surgical Program is a high-performing service providing care to 30,000 patients annual. St Joseph’s Hamilton is a busy academic teaching hospital that supports interprofessional learning for multiple health professional programs, including NP students, PA Students, medical students, nursing, and others.
This position would entail working within the dynamic General Surgery Team to assess, intervene and treating non-elective and elective general surgery patients. The NP will work with Physicians, various clinical specialties, allied health, and nursing. The Nurse Practitioner role is critical to optimal patient care and efficient flow. The successful applicant will work directly with the General Surgery Physicians and will provide a broad range of medical care to general surgery patient population.QUALIFICATIONS

  • Regulated health professional registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario registration in the RN (EC) class with no restrictions on registration or professional practice hearings pending. Either as an NP-Adult or NP-PHC, with significant relevant clinical expertise
  • Masters in nursing or relevant healthcare field required
  • Completion of NP-Adult, NP-Pediatric or NP-PHC program at the graduate level (Masters or Doctoral), from an approved academic facility
  • Clinical Faculty appointment or eligibility to pursue clinical faculty appointment at McMaster University School of Nursing or Graduate Studies
  • CNA Certification in Medical-Surgical and/or critical care an asset
  • 3-5 years recent documented experience and expertise in surgical care and evidence of experience or ability to work in clinical settings across the continuum of care required. Experience in General Surgery Care and/or Critical Care an asset
  • BCLS certified required
  • Previous program development experience preferred
  • Member of RNAO, NPAO membership preferred
  • Proven clinical, educator, administrative and research skills
  • Strong organizational, analytical, conceptual and communication skills
  • Demonstrated clinical excellence and expertise in the specified clinical service area of hire
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills (e.g., HBO/Star, Portal, Clinical Connect, MS Office, Patient Link etc.)
  • Proven success providing inspirational leadership in a dynamic team environment and ability to encourage innovation and creativity amongst team members

RESPONSIBILITES

  • Practices in accordance with federal and provincial/territorial legislation, CNO standards of practice and guidelines, and SJHH’s policies.
  • Understands the changes in scope of practice from that of a RN in the General Class and the ways that these changes affect responsibilities and accountabilities when assuming the protected title and expanded scope of practice of an NP.
  • Incorporates knowledge of diversity, cultural safety and determinants of health in the assessment, diagnosis and therapeutic management of patients/families/clients and in the evaluation of outcomes.
  • Incorporates knowledge of developmental and life stages, pathophysiology, psychopathology, epidemiology, environmental exposure, infectious diseases, behavioural sciences, demographics and family processes when performing health assessments, making diagnoses and providing overall therapeutic management.
  • Incorporates knowledge of the clinical manifestations of normal health events, acute illness/injuries, chronic diseases, comorbidities and emergency health needs, including the effects of multiple etiologies in the assessment, diagnosis and therapeutic management of patients/families/clients and in the evaluation of outcomes.
  • Integrates the principles of resource allocation and cost-effectiveness into clinical decision-making.
  • Provides patient/client diagnostic information and education that are relevant, theory-based and evidence-informed, using appropriate teaching/learning strategies.
  • Promotes safe client care by mitigating harm and addressing immediate risks for patients/families/clients and others affected by adverse events and near misses.
  • Reports adverse events to appropriate authorities, in keeping with relevant legislation and organizational policies.
  • Documents clinical data, assessment findings, diagnoses, plans of care, therapeutic interventions, patient/family/client responses and clinical rationale in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Adheres to federal and provincial/territorial legislation, policies and standards related to privacy, documentation and information management (this applies to verbal, written or electronic records).
  • Performs a comprehensive health assessment and completes a focused physical examination; identifies normal and abnormal findings, as appropriate to patient/client presentation. The NP exercises clinical reasoning and critical inquiry and assumes accountability for follow-up when indicated.
  • Consults with and/or refers clients to other healthcare providers at any point in the care continuum when the client’s condition is not within the nurse practitioner scope of practice or the individual nurse practitioner’s competence.
  • Acts as a consultant to and/or refers and accepts referrals from health-care providers, community agencies and allied non-health-care professionals.
  • Advocates for clients in relation to therapeutic intervention, healthcare access, the healthcare system and policy decisions that affect health and quality of life to improve client care and manage complex and challenging situations.
  • Collaborates with members of the health-care team to provide and promote inter-professional client-centered care at the individual, organizational and systems levels.
  • Collaborates with members of the healthcare team to promote and guide continuous quality improvement initiatives at the individual, organizational and systems levels.
  • Engages in evidence-informed practice by critically appraising and applying relevant research, best practice guidelines and theory when providing healthcare services. The NP may be a primary investigator, co-investigator and/or a member of the research team, stimulating research activities, the results of which may be applied in clinical practice or influence public policy.
  • Develops, utilizes and evaluates processes within the practice setting to ensure that patients/families/clients receive coordinated health services that identify patient/client outcomes and contribute to knowledge development.
  • Identifies and implements research-based innovations for improving patient/family/client care at the individual, organizational and systems levels. As a researcher, the NP strengthens the link between research and clinical practice by facilitating the understanding and application of research. For every practice change, the NP reviews existing research evidence and provides expert opinion
