How You Will Contribute:Reporting to the Senior Manager, Optical Engineering, as an Optical Systems Engineer, you will be part of the Optical Performance Team and will be involved in the development, modeling, testing, and customer support for current and next generation high speed optical line systems.
- You will collaborate with a multi-functional team of designers to develop MATLAB and/or Python models that simulate propagation physics through optical fibers, waveshapers, amplifiers, multiplexers, etc.
- You will research novel optical fiber and component technologies to develop next generation specifications that drive new hardware and system designs for very high bandwidth optical networks.
- You will apply some of your research to craft, develop, test, maintain, and improve algorithms used to control optical components and/or networks to achieve global performance optimization. Version control systems (like GIT) will be key enablers.
- You will push the boundaries of network automation, speed, and data processing of cutting-edge optical networks using RESTful and other similar application programming interfaces.
- You will develop big data and analytics frameworks to process optical performance metrics from data center interconnect networks to ultra-long haul submarine networks.
- You may review customer-reported issues and partner with design team and subject matter experts from other groups to determine the path forward and/or identify potential improvements.

The Must Haves:
- BSc, MSc, or a PhD degree in Engineering Physics, Physics, or Electrical Engineering, with a specific interest in optics, photonics & telecommunications.
- Proven debugging and problem-solving skills.
- Communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills are essential.
- Ability to learn on the job and adapt to new challenges.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Python, MATLAB, JavaScript, HTML5, or REST interfaces in co-op terms, intern terms, or through coursework.
- Foundational knowledge of development tools such as content versioning (e.g. Git) and bug tracking software (e.g. JIRA).
- Familiarity with Linux and Windows an asset.
- Familiarity with standard lab equipment such as spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, and signal generators is required (experience with optical test equipment preferred).
- Undergraduate level or higher training on the principals of digital communication systems.
- Coursework on fiber optic communication systems and optical components preferred.
Compensation and BenefitsThe annual pay range for this position is $59,700 – $95,300 CADPay ranges at Ciena are designed to accommodate variations in knowledge, skills, experience, market conditions, and locations, reflecting our diverse products, industries, and lines of business. Please note that the pay range information provided in this posting pertains specifically to the primary location, which is the top location listed in case multiple locations are available.Non-Sales employees may be eligible for a discretionary incentive bonus, while Sales employees may be eligible for a sales commission.
