  • Personal Support Worker (PSW) Certificate from an Ontario College Certificate Program or an accredited program, PSWEPA (Personal Support Worker Educational Program Accreditation) required
  • Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario CPR (C) certification required
  • Gentle Persuasive Approaches Training preferred
  • Restorative Care Certificate from an Ontario College Certificate program preferred

Skill, Ability and Experience:

  • Basic proficiency in the use of computers required
  • 2 years previous hospital PSW experience preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of asepsis principles preferred
  • Previous experience in maintaining supplies and equipment preferred

Principal Duties:Primary Function: Under the direction of the RN/RPN, performs assigned functions that support the health care team in assisting patients in activities of daily living and support effective operations of the department

  • Providing direct and indirect care to patients under the direction of registered nursing staff, assist in the provision of personal care which may include, but is not limited to bathing, grooming, skin care, mouth care, dressing, toileting, lifts/transfers, mobility assistance and feeding
  • Participate in shift report/transfer of care
  • Provides direct patient close observation when required
  • Reporting significant patient presentation to registered nursing staff to ensure patient safety
  • Documents/records patient care provided as required and according to Bluewater Health Policies
  • Responsible for the tidiness and cleanliness of patient care and nursing work areas relevant to the needs of the department

Distributes nourishments and beverages, makes extra nourishments and assists with feeding patients as needed

  • Makes beds, disposes and replaces linen according to procedure and prepares Ready baths
  • Restocks supplies for the unit/department
  • Porters patients, supplies and equipment as required by the department
  • Performing a variety of activities that support the functions of all team members
  • Participates in unit/department and Hospital Quality Improvement initiatives
  • Completes continuing education requirements as necessary
  • Reporting damage or breakage of instruments and equipment.
  • Ability to work independently in a changing environment, manage interruptions and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize opportunities for and contribute to process improvements
  • Interacts with others in a way that supports the goals of the organization through mutual respect, effective communications and co-operative working relationships
  • Participation in building a culture of safety and partnering with each other to improve the safety of patient care processes and systems
  • Performing other duties as assigned to assist nursing staff
  • Reports to the RN/RPN in a timely, objective manner without interpretation any changes in patient condition or new observations.
