Job description: Job descriptionThe Personal Support Worker (PSW) is responsible for providing resident-centred care. This permanent Casual position is expected to be available to work a minimum of 22.5 hours per week. This position works weekdays and weekends for day, afternoon and midnight shifts as part of our 24-hour operation. Casual PSWs are scheduled 3 out of 4 weekends. Candidates must be able to accept call-in hours and will have the ability to use availability to pick up additional shifts. Riverview Gardens offers Advanced Booking.Essential responsibilities

  • Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies
  • Assist with all activities of daily living including skin care, oral care, hair care, bathing, toileting, dressing, mobility, feeding and recreational activities
  • Ensure the comfort, safety and well-being of residents
  • Observe and report on residents’ health and living conditions
  • Recognize and report changes in a resident’s behaviour/condition
  • Maintain a safe, clean and orderly environment for residents
  • Respect resident confidentiality
  • Sort and bag all soiled linen, make and change beds, clean and tidy resident rooms
  • Support resident’s independence
  • Provide informal counseling, as needed
  • Follow all guidelines as legislated under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Play an integral role in planning and implementing the care of residents under their care
  • Protect own health and health of others by adopting safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately, and attending all relevant in-services regarding occupational health and safety

Essential qualifications

  • Possess a secondary school graduation diploma or equivalent education (i.e. GED certificate)
  • Certificate from Personal Support Worker program (if you are currently enrolled in a PSW program, please apply once you have graduated) in accordance with the requirements of the current regulations made under the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021
  • Previous experience working as a Personal Support Worker (PSW) (or Primary Caregiver) an asset
  • Experience with Point of Care documentation and PointClickCare (PCC) an asset
  • Experience with geriatric population in long term care setting

Other qualificationsThe following are preferred:

  • Current knowledge of and training in mechanical lifts, transferring and positioning techniques for residents
  • Proficient in transfers (bed, wheelchair, etc.), bathing, feeding and other personal care duties
  • Experience with restorative care
  • Experience participating in a workplace committee
  • Training in appropriate use of restraints and current best practices in least restraint policy
  • Possess computer skills

Certifications, memberships, licenses

  • Personal Support Worker Certificate required

Work environment/hours of work

  • This position works indoors
  • This position is expected to work a minimum of 22.5 hours per week and 3 out of 4 weekends
  • This position works weekdays and weekends for day, afternoon and midnight shifts as part of our 24-hour operation.
  • Candidates must be able to accept call-in hours and can use availability to pick up additional shifts.
  • Once hired, candidates may post into temporary full-time or part-time 8 or 12-hour lines working every other weekend. Riverview Gardens offers Advanced Booking.

Although it is not mandatory to be vaccinated, it is highly encouraged.Background check requirementsThis position works with vulnerable residents in a position of trust and authority, on a sustained and regular basis, in a largely unsupervised capacity. A Vulnerable Sector Screen is required (Fixing Long-Term Care Act section 252 O. Reg. 246/22) prior to being accepted for employment. You must be 18 years of age or older to obtain a vulnerable police check.All staff members shall promptly provide the employer with a signed declaration disclosing new charges, convictions, orders and restraining orders, consistent with Ontario Regulation section 253 O. Reg 246/22 made under the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, with respect to the period since the date the person’s last criminal reference check under subsection (2) was conducted.Essential physical and/or safety requirements

  • Annual Flu immunization is required
  • 2 step TB skin test to be completed within two weeks of starting position
  • The employer may request a “Physical Task Analysis”
  • Bending: occasional crouching; frequent twisting, kneeling, squatting, crawling; constant stooping (up to 4.55 kgs or 10 lbs) (assists residents with hygiene, grooming, toileting and dressing (i.e. bed baths, tub baths, showers, nail cleaning, shaving, perineal care, oral care, application of skin products, grooming, hair and face and hand washing, etc.); assists residents out of bed, porters residents back and forth to dining room at meal times and to resident activities; preventative skin care by turning residents, re-positioning residents in bed and chair, etc. )
  • Walking: frequent balancing; constant walking on level surface (up to 28.6 kgs or 63 lbs) (porters residents back and forth to dining room at meal times and to resident activities; obtains and distributes supplies used on the nursing units; participates in indoor/outdoor resident activities)
  • Reaching: frequent reaching about shoulder; constant reaching below shoulder, forward, handling (up to 28.6 kgs or 63 lbs) (-assists residents with hygiene, grooming, toileting and dressing (i.e. bed baths, tub baths, showers, nail cleaning, shaving, perineal care, oral care, application of skin products, grooming, hair and face and hand washing, etc.); assists residents out of bed, porters residents back and forth to dining room at meal times and to resident activities; preventative skin care by turning residents, re-positioning residents in bed and chair, etc.; utilizes mechanical lifting devices; obtains and distributes supplies used on the nursing units; stocks linen/care carts and empties garbage/laundry carts)
  • Lifting: frequent lifting at shoulder, carrying, pushing at or above shoulder, pulling at or above shoulder; constant lifting floor to waist, waist to floor, pushing below shoulder, pulling below shoulder (up to 28.6 kgs or 63 lbs) (assists residents with hygiene, grooming, toileting and dressing (i.e. bed baths, tub baths, showers, nail cleaning, shaving, perineal care, oral care, application of skin products, grooming, hair and face and hand washing, etc.); assists residents out of bed, porters residents back and forth to dining room at meal times and to resident activities; preventative skin care by turning residents, re-positioning residents in bed and chair, etc.; utilizes mechanical lifting devices; obtains and distributes supplies used on the nursing units; stocks linen/care carts and empties garbage/laundry carts)
  • Standing: constant standing inside (up to 4.55 kgs or 10 lbs) (assists residents with hygiene, grooming, toileting and dressing; participates in indoor/outdoor resident activities)
  • Hands: frequent gripping, pinching (up to 4.55 kgs or 10 lbs) (assists residents with hygiene, grooming, toileting and dressing (i.e. bed baths, tub baths, showers, nail cleaning, shaving, perineal care, oral care, application of skin products, grooming, hair and face and hand washing, etc.); assists residents with eating their meals; communication via email)
