Job description: UNIT PROFILE:
The Mental Health Nursing Resource Team is a staffing team that provides quality holistic nursing care to clients living with major mental disorders across the acute and tertiary care settings within the Mental Health & Addictions Program at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. It is comprised of full time and part time RNs and RPNs whose shifts are assigned to various clinical units to meet staffing requirements. Mental Health Nursing Resource Team nurses may be called in for relief or pre-booked as the need arises and will practice in multiple settings, including acute mental health (Charlton and West 5th Campuses), and tertiary mental health (West 5th Campus).POSITION SUMMARY:
The RPN will be responsible for the provision of quality holistic nursing care to clients in the acute and tertiary care settings within the Mental Health program. This care shall include comprehensive assessment, treatment, and evaluation of patients suffering from major mental disorders, in collaboration with the RN. The RPN will practice in multiple settings, including acute mental health (Charlton and West 5th campuses), and tertiary mental health (West 5th Campus). This RPN will possess nursing skills which will be transferable and adaptable to the various mental health care settings within St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. This RPN will provide client-centered care within the recovery framework, and will be committed to continuous professional development of his / her psychiatric nursing competencies. The RPN will be committed to reducing and ultimately eliminating the use of restraint and seclusion.QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current registration with the College of Nurse of Ontario required.
  • Current BCLS certification
  • Practical Nursing Diploma essential including Asepsis Technique and Medication Administration
  • Previous clinical experience in psychiatric mental health nursing with demonstrated knowledge and skills in assessment, treatment, and evaluation of nursing care preferred
  • Strong knowledge base of major mental disorders and current treatment modalities
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize problem solving and critical thinking
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills, contributing to positive patient outcomes
  • Ability to perform comprehensive mental status examinations with concise communication of findings. For highly complex or unpredictable mental health patients, this must be done in collaboration with the RN.
  • Evidence of understanding of current health care legislation, including the Mental Health Act
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development
  • Demonstrated judgment in risk assessment and management
  • Ability and willingness to work in different environments
  • Good attendance and work record is essential
  • Demonstrated ability to practice within the Standards of the CNO
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills related to crisis intervention
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the treatment of addictions and withdrawal
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in effective therapeutic communication techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to work in collaboration with Registered Nurses and within an interdisciplinary team
  • A resume outlining experience and education must accompany the application
  • Demonstrates competence (knowledge/skills/attitude) in the use of non-violent physical crisis interventions, trauma-informed care and other best practices available to promote healing and recovery.

Rotating shifts and extended hours – days, nights, weekends, and holidaysWAGE RATE:
Hourly: $28.69$29.92$31.17
