Research spans three Toronto-based campuses, ten programs and three scientific platforms. Our main aims are to understand and prevent disease, and to develop treatments that enhance and extend life. Our vision is to invent the future of health care. Each year, we conduct about $170 million in research across 500,000 square feet, including in the Centre for Research in Image-Guided Therapeutics.Within the Sunnybrook Research Institute, the Focussed Ultrasound team is developing a system to improve the treatment of brain disorders. The team is currently in need of a research engineer/physicist with a background in mechanical, and/or mechatronics engineering. The ideal candidate has familiarity with ISO standards relevant to medical device development (ISO 14971, ISO 13485). The role involves design, build, and test activities as part of a team and as such requires good interpersonal, and communication skills. Furthermore, there is significant hands-on work during testing and trials.Summary of Duties:

• Design and develop mechanical components and systems for medical devices
• Design and develop tooling and test systems for medical devices
• Initial prototype feasibility studies, procurement, testing, and evaluation
• Collaborate with electrical engineers, software developers, and clinical teams
• Prepare and maintain documentation for regulatory submissions and quality assurance
• Work within a continuous improvement framework to improve system designs, with an emphasis on system reliability
• Assist the research team on daily lab tasks and follow guidelines

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechatronics or a related field.
• 1-5 years of experience in mechanical design, preferably in the biomedical or medical device industry.
• Experience in developing and executing performance test on products
• Strong understanding of materials and manufacturing processes such as machining and 3D printing
• Proficiency in 3D modeling and drawing generation in a Solidworks PDM environment
• Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
• Passion to contribute to cutting-edge medical device development
• Proficiency with hands-on work
• Experience or working knowledge of testing medical devices, defining test strategy, designing and developing test setups
• Strong interpersonal, time management and organizational skills.
• Strong oral, written, and technical communication skills.
• P.Eng. license (or EIT status) is an asset
