Job description: POSITION SUMMARY:The Research Technician-Education Simulation will assist in leading the education/medical simulations in collaboration with the Medical Director Simulation and/or SJHH staff simulation facilitators. The Research Technician will participate in educational simulations for purposes of instruction, practice, research, or evaluation. This position will support instruction or assessment of learners in a simulated clinical environment and also may participate in video productions, support voice-over for e-learning courses, photographs and other teaching material as required.QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Undergraduate Degree in technology or health related field required
  • Minimum 3 years healthcare experience with familiarity with medical terminology and procedures
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with a variety of people throughout simulations
  • Excellent memorization and concentration skills
  • Excellent listening and comprehension skills
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt in different simulations

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for promoting and providing simulation services to support the enhanced delivery of clinical education, planning for implantation services, quality improvement, research, and assessment activities. The Specialist is primarily responsible for providing client services and simulation specific support for all simulation activities including but not limited to preparation, set up and maintenance of the equipment, and participation in the simulation scenarios.
  • Knowledgeable of the theories and best practices in Simulation education and well as the use and operation of different simulation technologies ranging from task trainers to full body patient simulators and virtual reality surgical simulators.
  • Maintain proficiency in existing and emerging technologies including basic theory, design, and implementation.
  • Required to assist in the preparation and development of a variety of simulations with accuracy and tact based on the situation and respond appropriately.
  • Collaborate with other team members and staff to plan and design (including computer programming, manikin programming, resource allocation, trouble shooting) simulation scenarios to ensure the centre can run at maximal capacity
  • Preparation of scenarios to ensure best practices are followed, including but not limited to: identifying and programing appropriate manikins, programming software, pre-briefing, setting up simulation rooms, procuring/selecting appropriate equipment, creation of props/task trainers, and ensuring all Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) accreditation standards and guidelines are followed.
  • Participate in scenarios; this may include role-playing (nurse, MD, family member etc.), ensuring audio-visual (AV) equipment is cued appropriately, and delivering medical information to participants.
  • Responsible for the safe and secure collection, editing, storage and dissemination of confidential research and assessment video footage as per Simulation Program guidelines
  • Troubleshoot during scenarios with respect to technical, resource and education aspects. Use porcine (pig) tissue including: ordering, processing and disposing of tissue.
  • Act as a “facilitator’ interacting with participants during and debriefing after the learning experience toward successfully meeting established learning outcomes for the experiential learning session
  • Gather feedback received from participants, and facilitators related to the simulation learning experience for assessment and review.
  • Guides participants in simulated skills training practice and remediation
  • Supports instructors in selecting and delivering appropriate modality of simulation to meet learning objectives and which is appropriate to selected learners
  • Participate in meetings, committees, and events relevant to simulation and healthcare education
  • Research and test the usability of medical equipment for simulated activities.
  • Maintain and oversee the Simulation learning spaces, including setting up and taking down equipment, completing minor repairs on simulators, troubleshooting issues related to hi-fidelity simulators and operating systems, preventative equipment maintenance, cost sourcing and comparison, software and equipment updates, scheduling of the lab space.
  • Remain up to date on current trends related to simulation and simulation equipment including current literature related to simulation best practices and mentor new support staff and faculty.
  • Independently perform routine and preventative maintenance for all Simulation Program equipment across sites
