The Safety/Project Manager – Construction will be instrumental assisting in the establishment of an actively caring safety culture. This role will provide leadership and support to operational managers and supervisors assisting with implementing and sustaining company safety programs, systems and initiatives for our construction projects and also assist in supporting safety activities at collections and processing operations. The position reports to the Director of Health & Safety/Risk.Position Description
- Review and validate invoices related to construction projects.
- Monitor the progress of construction projects.
- Prepare and present update reports on project status to stakeholders.
- Address and resolve any construction-related issues that arise.
- Coordinate between the internal project owner and the constructor to ensure smooth communication and project flow.
- Assist with contractor selection, ensuring thorough safety due diligence.
- Assist with safety and insurance issues related to the contract.
- Conduct upfront due diligence to vet contractors, ensuring they meet all safety requirements.
- Inspect work sites to ensure compliance with health and safety (H&S) requirements as outlined in the contract.
- Handle any safety issues that arise on the construction sites.
- Investigate any incidents that occur on behalf of the company, documenting findings and recommending corrective actions.
- Develop and implement construction procedures to enhance safety and operational efficiency.
- Support the ongoing implementation and maintenance of company-wide Health and Safety programs to improve reliability and content.
- Manage and update the construction safety program.
- Support construction safety activities to ensure compliance with applicable safety legislation through the application of the construction safety and other programs.
- Support branch teams managing contractor safety.
- Maintain accurate and complete records that meet regulatory requirements.
- Conduct audits on accident/incident reporting and provide guidance and assistance in developing and sustaining corrective action plans.
- Responsible for Health and Safety data management, including trend analysis for assigned sites.
- Effectively manage resources and applicable budgets.
- Participate in the Joint Health and Safety Committee.
- Anticipate, identify, and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices through work site knowledge, employee interaction, and work site inspections.
- Provide recommendations for correcting safety hazards and unsafe work practices.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge in the field of Health and Safety with particular emphasis on emerging safety trends, methods, and practices affecting our industry/operations.
- Develop and deliver various employee Health and Safety training programs.
- Maintain safety software systems as required.
- Report directly to the Director of Risk, Corporate Health & Safety.
Skills & Qualifications
- Certificate of Recognition (COR) Program auditor/implementation experience is an asset.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in a health and safety role construction/project management role.
- CRSP designation or in the process of certification is an asset.
- National Construction Safety Office certification or can obtain one within 12 months of hire.
- Strong legislative expertise with respect to the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Proven ability to coach and influence.
- Ability to work independently.
- Proven ability to bring projects to conclusion.
- Experience working with management in both unionized and non-unionized environments.
- Experience with safety committees regarding auditing, training, and implementing best practices.
- Participation in Safety Groups.
- Proven track record in designing and delivering safety training; great presentation skills.
- Excellent command of the English language (both verbal and written).
- Strong proficiency in MS Office Suite (particularly Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Experience in the waste industry, transportation or manufacturing are definite assets.
- This position may be based out of our Oakville site with frequent travel to our other Canadian sites; flexibility to travel is a requirement for this position.
