Job title: Senior Accountant

Job description: Are you interested in working within a team environment where you will perform senior level accounting and financial reporting for complex capital projects? Do you have excellent communication and time management skills? You could be part of the Business Financial Analytics (BFA) – Capital team that is responsible for performing general capital project accounting, funding analysis, account reconciliation, and grant reporting for a range of capital programs, in addition to providing accounting guidance for capital transactions.What will you do?

  • Oversee project accounting for capital projects approved under the City of Edmonton’s capital budget
  • Analyze project transactions against the accounting framework and determine the appropriate accounting treatment
  • Ensure all capital projects are appropriately funded, including accounting for and reporting on external funding arrangements
  • Oversee the review of Assets Under Construction and the creation/capitalization of tangible capital assets
  • Review and approve month-end and year-end adjustments and accruals
  • Prepare or review working paper packages related to capital financial reporting
  • Provide leadership, direction, guidance and supervision to a team of 1-3 individuals by communicating department vision, work, values, and core deliverables/tasks
  • Lead performance management of employees including evaluating performance and delivering feedback
  • Participate in system enhancement and process improvement projects
  • Perform related duties as required

Qualifications

  • A Degree in Accounting is required
  • Professional Accounting Designation (CPA, CA, CMA, CGA) is required
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible financial reporting experience, including 1 year of supervisory experience

Skills required for success:

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and strong attention to detail are required
  • Significant knowledge and experience with SAP, Google Suite and other related systems within the context of the work
  • Understanding of public sector accounting standards as directed by Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada Public Sector Handbook
  • Strong understanding of year-end accounting processes and experience with preparation of complex financial statements and reconciliations
  • Ability to adhere to established business practices, internal controls and policies within a large corporate environment
  • High level of analytical and conceptual skills to identify and resolve complex financial issues
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, customer service, time management, and prioritization skills and the aptitude to maintain working relationships with all levels of management and non-management personnel
  • Ability to direct, mentor, and coach those under your direct supervision

  • Note: This position ​may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement ​with ​the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52. ​
