Job description: Description :The Mustard Seed seeks dedicated Shelter Support Workers for our Winter Warming initiative to provide a safe, comfortable environment for our guests during the challenging winter months. Serving as pillars of respect, gratitude, and professionalism, our Support Workers play an indispensable role in ensuring our guests’ well-being, safety, and dignity.Position Duration: Until March 31, 2025
Work Schedule Options:

  • Full-time (Sun-Thurs)
  • Part-time (Fri-Sat)
  • Casual shifts (as needed basis)

Shifts Available:

  • Mornings: 7am-3pm
  • Afternoons: 3pm-11pm
  • Nights: 11pm-7am

Reporting To: Shelter Supervisor
Location: Kamloops, BCMajor Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Uphold our standards of professionalism, respect, and gratitude in all interactions.
  • Identify participant needs in a compassionate and respectful manner.
  • Manage conflicts and provide crisis interventions.
  • Maintain a respectful and safe service environment; enforce facility rules and cleanliness standards.
  • Foster healthy relationships and communicate effectively with team members, volunteers, and community participants.
  • Document records, stats, and incident reports.
  • Engage in regular staff meetings, briefings, and trainings.
  • Be a proud Mustard Seed ambassador, supporting and working alongside our cherished volunteers.

Minimum Qualifications and Skills:

  • A Diploma/Certificate in Human Services, Social Work or a related field is a significant advantage.
  • Passion for working with vulnerable populations; 1-2 years of relevant experience is a plus.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.
  • Solid organizational, time management, and both written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Possession of a valid Standard First Aid and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification.
  • Integrity, discretion, and tact are paramount.

Working Conditions:

  • This position involves working in a challenging and potentially volatile environment where you may encounter racial slurs, name-calling, and derogatory comments from community members. It requires resilience, conflict resolution skills, and the ability to maintain professionalism and composure in the face of adversity. Training and support will be provided to ensure your safety and well-being.
  • Engage in compassionate care, conflict resolution, and frequent manual labor.
  • Work directly with the at-risk population in life recovery.
  • The role can be fast-paced and mentally demanding.
  • Moderate physical activity, including standing, walking, and sitting in various conditions.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
