Reporting directly to the Manager, Accounting & Settlements, this role is responsible for leading a team that oversees the company’s Accounting functions.The ideal candidate will be an experienced accountant with in-depth technical knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and a track record of strong leadership and coaching capabilities. Key responsibilities include managing the accounting cycle using our financial system of record, analyzing the results for accuracy and completeness and ensuring timely completion of key SOX controls.This role involves close collaboration with various Finance teams, HR, and IT business partners to achieve corporate goals. The successful candidate will also support the accounting team by providing direction, guidance, and accounting expertise to business operations, including marketing and sales.WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Develop and execute the 1-2 year strategic plan for the team, ensuring the achievement of annual objectives.
  • Lead, coach, and support a high-performing accounting team.
  • Oversee financial governance by implementing and maintaining efficient financial processes and controls, ensuring compliance with IFRS and SOX requirements.
  • Direct the accurate and timely capture of business and financial results, including closing entries, account reconciliations, and risk assessments of systems and reconciliation processes.
  • Manage the application of accounting treatments and disclosures in coordination with the External Accounting function.
  • Stay current with IFRS accounting standards.
  • Guide the accounting cycle through changes in contracts, markets, business growth, and expansion.
  • Deliver key external reporting for two public entities, ensuring compliance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX), IFRS reporting, and corporate policies.
  • Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned.

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOUTo be successful in this role, we are looking for the following must-have qualifications and experience:

  • Required, with a minimum of 5+ years of post-designation experience.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience, specifically in leadership roles.
  • Working knowledge of interpreting agreements and thorough understanding of the associated accounting practices.
  • Experience with SOX compliance.
  • Knowledge of electricity markets in Canada, the United States and Australia.
  • Ability to understand critical success factors behind trading strategies, tactics, and the underlying themes affecting actual results.
  • Proven ability to lead a team in maximizing the use of existing systems (e.g., SAP) and other IT applications.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the capacity to make timely decisions or delegate tasks effectively.
  • Demonstrated supervisory skills, including building, leading, and developing diverse teams in a professional manner, while fostering trust and engagement.
  • Ability to influence, negotiate, and facilitate buy-in with various cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to take on new responsibilities as needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and foster a positive organizational culture, promoting values such as inclusivity, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
