Information Services responds to general inquiries in respect of all programs administered by TRA and answers questions about specific corporate and commodity tax and levy accounts, assessments, and reassessments.Client and Legal Services provides tax interpretations, develops technical publications, and administers the dispute resolution process on objections, appeals, and waivers of penalties or interest. As a Tax Analyst with Alberta’s Tax and Revenue Administration (TRA), you’ll be part of a knowledgeable team dedicated to supporting Alberta’s tax programs and providing invaluable expertise to government and external stakeholders alike.About the Role
Reporting to either the Director of Interpretations or the Director of Objections and Appeals, the Tax Analyst, Interpretations and Objections is a critical part of the Tax Services Branch at TRA. In this role, you will use your expertise to interpret Alberta tax legislation, analyze tax-related objections and appeals, and make well-founded recommendations for resolving complex tax disputes. You will ensure fair application of tax policies, guide decision-making on objection cases, and propose legislative or policy adjustments to maintain equitable treatment across programs. The role involves technical writing, legal research, and active collaboration with other departments to promote clarity and compliance in Alberta’s tax programs.Roles and Responsibilities
In this multifaceted role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Legislative Interpretation: Provide in-depth technical interpretations of Alberta’s tax acts for both internal and external stakeholders, promoting the fair and effective application of legislation.
  • Objections and Appeals: Review and analyze objections filed under Alberta tax acts, identifying, and recommending resolutions based on legislation, TRA policies, and case law. This includes assessing federal objection resolutions and waiver requests.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Clearly communicate decisions and explanations to both internal and external stakeholders, promoting understanding and compliance while addressing complex issues in a professional manner.
  • Legislative and Policy Development: Identify inconsistencies or inequities in legislation and propose updates to policies or processes. Your recommendations may drive changes that improve fairness and transparency within Alberta’s tax programs.
  • Collaboration and Legal Support: Work closely with Alberta Justice on tax appeals, contribute to discussions with external agencies, and assist in the development and delivery of training for TRA programs and stakeholders.

Please click on this to view the job description for this position.QualificationsPost-secondary degree in Accounting, Finance, Public Administration, or related discipline plus a professional accounting designation or law degree. Completion of the CPA in-depth tax program will be an asset.A minimum of 6 years of extensive experience with Alberta tax acts and the Income Tax Act (Canada) is necessary for in-depth analysis of highly technical tax interpretation and application.Assets include:

  • In-depth knowledge of Alberta tax acts and the Income Tax Act (Canada)
  • Extensive experience in tax interpretation and dispute resolution with solid knowledge of accounting, tax law, and the business environment.
  • Proven analytical, research, and problem-solving skills to support fair and accurate resolutions of objections and disputes.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to clearly explain complex issues, decisions, and recommendations to stakeholders with professionalism and diplomacy.
  • Completion of the CPA in-depth tax program or similar advanced tax education.
  • Experience in preparing technical publications, reports, and other tax-related documentation.
