Job description: Position Scope:As the Tax Manager at North American Construction Group, you will oversee all domestic and international income and sales tax transactions. The ideal candidate will possess a CPA designation and will have completed the In-Depth Tax Program, with extensive experience in tax. The role will lead the Company’s tax transactions, including planning and compliance for domestic and international income and indirect taxes, transfer pricing, and tax accounting, as well as provincial, federal, and international sales taxes.   • Lead income tax and indirect tax compliance in Canada, USA, and other international jurisdictions.
  • Prepare financial statement tax notes in accordance with US GAAP, including account reconciliations and related journal entries.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for external tax matters with consultants, government auditors, and financial auditors.
  • Manage Scientific Research & Experimental Development (SR&ED) process, coordinating with external advisors and internal product development teams.
  • Develop and implement internal processes and controls related to taxation requirements.

Tax Advisory and Planning:

  • Advise on the tax implications of key business decisions.
  • Design and implement the company’s global transfer pricing regime.
  • Manage and coordinate tax planning and compliance services for corporations, partnerships, trusts, and individuals.
  • Conduct tax advisory and planning engagements, drafting written memorandums and instruction letters.
  • Identify opportunities for tax planning and other special services.

Research and Analysis:

  • Identify and research technical tax issues.
  • Stay updated on new tax legislation and case law.
  • Conduct thorough research on federal, provincial, and local taxation issues, providing strategic recommendations.
  • Analyze tax laws and advise on various corporate tax matters.

Mentorship and Team Leadership:

  • Provide mentoring and technical guidance to staff.
  • Lead the functional area of tax for NACG and our joint ventures and affiliates.
  • Foster cross-functional collaboration and knowledge-sharing initiatives.

Compliance and Audit Management:

  • Manage deadlines and filings for Canadian, US, and Australian tax requirements.
  • Ensure timely and accurate compliance with tax laws and regulations, advising management on potential impacts.
  • Act as a liaison with federal, provincial, and local authorities to fulfill compliance requirements.
  • Lead external tax audits, inquiries, and controversies, ensuring favorable outcomes.
  • Manage quarterly and annual tax provision calculations and annual tax disclosures in financial statements.
  • Oversee deferred taxes across the group and assist with complex tax accounting issues as required.

International Collaboration and Strategy:

  • Collaborate with international finance teams, reviewing financial statements and addressing tax inquiries.
  • Work with domestic and international tax experts to manage returns, reviews, advice, and audits.
  • Drive compliance with Provincial sales & use tax regulations and remittances.
  • Coordinate the administration of GST/PST/HST/QST compliance, including monthly returns and provincial restricted tax credits.
  • Collaborate with third-party tax recovery firms and lead special projects as needed.

  • CPA designation required.
  • Five years’ of post-designation experience of relevant tax planning and compliance experience.
  • Completion of the In-Depth Tax Program.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Self-motivated team player with the ability to take initiative.
  • Comprehensive understanding of accounting principles and theory.

  • Proficient research capabilities to navigate complex tax regulations and laws.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills for managing multiple tasks effectively.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and adhere to strict deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Advanced proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel for accurate data analysis and reporting.
  • Collaborative mindset, working well with individuals at all levels within the organization and external stakeholders.
  • Strong capability to motivate teams and produce quality reporting and value-added services.
