Job description: The Technical Specialist, Fire and Life Safety, develops, implements, delivers, enforces and monitors Client-Partner fire and life protection programs. The incumbent acts as a technical specialist, providing technical and administrative advice and guidance on fire and life safety, prevention, engineering, investigation, training and building emergency plans.KEY AND PERIODIC ACTIVITIES
The duties and responsibilities listed below are representative but not all-inclusive:
Primary
- Lead fire prevention initiatives (e.g. issue Hot Work permits, follow up on action items in fire prevention reports, inspect venues prior to events)
- Oversee fire engineering construction and commissioning plans to ensure compliance.
- Oversee inspection, testing, monitoring and/or maintenance of fire suppression and detection systems and standpipe systems
- Maintain, design and review construction and acceptance testing reports
- Provide fire training for the Client-Partners and on-site civilians
- Develop and maintain effective relationships within DCC, and with industry, the Client-Partners and/or stakeholders
- Ensure quality standards are met, in line with corporate and Client-Partner expectations
Other
- Carry out preliminary fire investigations and contact appropriate authorities, when required
- Attend meetings as a professional member (e.g. boards of inquiry, summary investigations, official planning)
- Maintain records of fire incidents (i.e. Integrated Fire Services Management and Reporting)
- Act as the emergency coordinator, including developing an emergency plan, monitoring adherence to government building codes, and maintaining emergency training and other records
- Support and/or lead business development activities
- Manage risk
- Other duties as assigned
SKILLS
General and Specific Knowledge
- Best practices, methods, trends and legislation in fire prevention and enforcement and health and safety.
- Building materials, construction and principles of combustion
- Building extinguishing and alarm systems
- Project and risk management principles.
Formal Education and/or Certification(s) and Experience
- Minimum: college diploma in fire and life safety systems or related field with four years’ relevant experience, or the equivalent
- Preferred: National Fire Protection Association certification (Fire inspector level 2 and Certified plan examiner) with a minimum of three years’ experience in a fire engineering organization, including involvement in fire inspection, fire safety plan review, engineering plan review, compliance/acceptance testing and report review for fire detection and suppression systems; membership in the National Association of Fire Investigators
Abilities
- Use applicable computer software and operating systems
- Read and interpret construction plans and specifications related to fire
- Apply project and risk management principles
DEVELOPMENT AND LEADERSHIP
- Provide functional advice and guidance to employees and the Client-Partners
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Typical office environment with occasional travel.
- Some work may be located on construction sites; incumbent may occasionally be required to wear basic safety equipment
