ALES is made up of 500+ faculty and staff, 1700+ undergraduates and 600+ graduate students. ALES is focused on teaching, research & community service in its departments and schools: Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science; Renewable Resources; Human Ecology; Resource Economics and Environmental Sociology.We have strong academic undergraduate and graduate programs, a large research infrastructure which includes 25,000 acres of farm & ranch land in key ecologies across Alberta, and high-impact research in collaboration with our partners.Position SummaryWe are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated individual to join our team at the Poultry Research Facility. Under the supervision of the Unit manager, the role of the Technician is to provide support for research and unit operations.The Technician will work to provide daily care to the poultry flocks housed at the Poultry Facility. The ideal candidate will utilize effective communication, flexibility, organizational, and time management skills, and the ability to work with minimal supervision to complete their duties. The role includes working with other staff and students, and completing different regulatory duties for poultry production and food safety.Duties

• Provides daily care for flocks, which includes feeding, picking eggs, monitoring health, etc.
• Ensures adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and animal handling protocols
• Maintenance of required records for regulatory agencies such as CFIA, Egg Farmers of Canada, etc.
• Performs various procedures required in poultry production, such as vaccinations and other specialized techniques
• Operates and maintains facility equipment, such as tractors/skid steers, waterline equipment, etc.
• Yard maintenance and set up, or building of equipment

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma (Animal Science or Tech Diploma Preferred)
• Computer training/knowledge (Excel and Google Suite)
• General knowledge of construction/maintenance techniques

Preferred Qualifications

• Animal training focused on poultry production and handling, and/or training in procedures dealing with poultry slaughter and processing (food safety)
• Training and knowledge of the “On Farm Food Safety programs” related to poultry production, including biosecurity
• General (FAPWC-Faculty Animal Policy & Welfare Committee & UAPWC-University Animal Policy & Welfare Committee) Part 1 and 2
• First Aid Training, WHMIS
• Tractor and Skid Steer Operator Training
