TransAlta believes that diversity enhances the quality of its performance, is an essential element of effective corporate governance, and cultivates a strong workplace culture.ABOUT THE ROLEReporting to the Director, Corporate Tax, you will play a pivotal role in leading and advising on US tax matters, ensuring compliance with tax regulations, and optimizing tax strategies to support TransAlta’s business objectives. This role requires a deep understanding of US tax laws, strong analytical skills, and the ability to work collaboratively across various departments. This role is based out of our new Head Office in Downtown Calgary, with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. To ensure that we find optimal talent, we are open to the role being Remote for candidates outside of Alberta, or for those living outside Calgary & surrounding area (ex: Edmonton).WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Manage, including preparation and review, the filing of U.S. federal, applicable state, and local tax returns, including cross border tax compliance filings (Form 5471, 5472 and 8858)

Preparation and review of the U.S. tax provisions and analysis under IFRS for financial reporting purposes. This includes deferred taxes, uncertain tax provisions, valuation allowances and financial statement tax note disclosure such as income tax rate reconciliation under IAS 12Develop and implement tax planning strategies to minimize tax liabilities and optimize tax positionsProvide U.S. tax advice and support with business transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, restructurings and domestic or cross-border financingMonitor and analyze changes in tax legislation and assess the potential impact on the companyManage and coordinate tax audits and inquiries by federal, state, and local tax authoritiesPrepare and present responses to tax notices and audit findingsWork closely with the Finance, Legal, and Business Development teams to provide tax insights and support on various projects and initiativesAssist is U.S. tax forecasting and modeling of cash tax horizonAssist in the development and implementation of internal tax policies and proceduresProvide training and guidance to junior tax staff and other departments on U.S. tax-related mattersExperience with Advance Pricing Arrangements and Tax Equity Partnership Financing considered a plusWHAT WE NEED FROM YOUBachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related fieldCPA designation or equivalent is preferredMaster’s degree in US tax or equivalent is preferredMinimum of 7-10 years of relevant tax experience, preferably in a U.S. corporate tax environment or public accounting firmExtensive experience with U.S. federal, state, and local tax compliance and reportingProven track record of successful tax planning and advisory workIn-depth knowledge of U.S. tax laws and regulationsStrong analytical and problem-solving skillsExcellent written and verbal communication skillsAbility to work independently and as part of a teamProficiency in tax software and Microsoft Office applicationsHigh level of integrity and professionalismStrong attention to detail and accuracyAbility to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environmentProactive and results-oriented mindsetWe offer our employees comprehensive and flexible benefits, competitive compensation, annual incentives, and a rewards program.
